CVCLAW’s patent experts conducted a seminar entitled “The Law and the Outputs of Academic Research and Development: A Forum on Intellectual Property Protection, Patents and Technology Transfer Act” at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (“UPLB”) on 06 September 2010 before an audience of professors and researchers based in UPLB, as well as delegates from nearby research institutions, including the International Rice Research Institute (“IRRI”), the Philippine Rice Research Institute (“PhilRice”), and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (“PCCARD”).
The forum was co-sponsored by CVCLAW and the UPLB Chemical Society, in cooperation with the College of Arts and Sciences through the Institute of Chemistry, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, and the Southeast Asia Research Center for Agriculture-Biotechnology Information Center. The lecture series, which was open to the public was held at the Drilon Hall, SEARCA Building, UPLB Campus, Laguna.
The program started with a lecture on the Technology Transfer Act or Republic Act No. 10055 by a Senior Partner of CVCLAW, Patricia A. O. Bunye. Susan Villanueva, also a Senior Partner of CVCLAW, followed with a discussion on Invention Patents and Utility Models. Oliver Baclay, Jr., a junior associate of CVCLAW gave a short talk about the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The forum ended with a discussion on the Plant Variety Protection Act by Edmund Jason Baranda, a former Senior Associate of CVCLAW.
The patent seminar was envisioned to raise the awareness of Filipino inventors on patent laws especially those connected with the academe and government research institutions.
